AI investors in Asia seen shifting focus to earnings ahead of Xi-Trump summit

Investors across Asia are beginning to pivot their approach toward artificial intelligence, moving away from speculative bets and toward a demand for tangible financial results. According to Chris Oberoi, the head of Asia Pacific research at Bank of America Global Research, the market is entering a more mature phase where simple exposure to the technology is no longer enough. Shareholders are now looking for concrete proof that these digital tools are actually driving productivity and translating into bottom line growth.

Oberoi suggests that the central question for the industry has shifted to whether AI can be effectively monetized and if it provides real operational value. While some skeptics have questioned the long term viability of current valuations, he believes the answer to those questions is an absolute yes, though companies will need to show consistent earnings reports to maintain investor confidence during this transition.

This shift in sentiment comes at a critical geopolitical moment as President Xi Jinping prepares to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington this Thursday. The high stakes summit between the world’s two largest economies is expected to lean heavily on discussions regarding trade and technology. With both nations vying for dominance in the semiconductor and software spaces, the outcome of these talks could significantly impact how AI firms operate across borders.

As Asian markets brace for the diplomatic fallout of the meeting, analysts expect volatility depending on any new restrictions or agreements reached on tech exports. For now, however, the primary driver for regional portfolios remains a cold look at balance sheets, ensuring that the hype surrounding generative AI is backed by actual profit margins before further capital is committed.
