Feds Reportedly Investigating Crypto Titan Binance Over Iran Sanctions

Federal authorities are reportedly launching a new probe into Binance Holdings Ltd. to determine if the cryptocurrency giant violated U.S. sanctions regarding Iran. According to reports from Bloomberg Law and Reuters, the investigation involves the Justice Department’s criminal division and the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan. Investigators are specifically looking into whether the exchange failed to block prohibited trades on its platform, which remains the largest crypto exchange globally by both trading volume and user base.

This latest legal headache comes shortly after reports surfaced that Binance may have sidelined internal compliance officers who flagged billions of dollars in suspicious payments. Specifically, concerns were raised about roughly 1.7 billion dollars moving from Hong Kong-based firms Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale toward wallets linked to Iranian-backed groups, including Yemen’s Houthi rebels. While Binance has denied these claims and even pursued defamation litigation against reporting outlets, the Justice Department recently moved to seize millions of dollars from those same Hong Kong firms, alleging they helped facilitate the sale of black-market Iranian oil.

The situation is particularly sensitive given the current geopolitical climate, as the United States continues to tighten economic pressure on Iran amid escalating conflict in the region. For Binance, this represents a recurring struggle with federal regulators. Former CEO Changpeng Zhao was pardoned by President Trump in late 2025 following a massive previous settlement where the company paid over 4 billion dollars in fines for anti-money laundering failures. Despite agreements to allow independent federal monitors to oversee their operations, reports suggest Binance has been lobbying officials to have those monitors removed.

In a statement provided to Gizmodo, Binance spokesperson Ross O’Leary insisted that the company maintains a zero tolerance policy for sanctions violations and continues to cooperate fully with law enforcement efforts to shut down bad actors. Legal experts note that while a federal investigation is serious, it does not automatically lead to formal charges. However, with data showing a massive surge in cryptocurrency flows toward sanctioned entities over the past year, federal agencies appear increasingly determined to treat digital exchanges with the same rigor as traditional banks.
