Kraken’s parent Payward is building a financial empire that goes far beyond crypto trading

For fifteen years, Kraken was known primarily as a powerhouse in the world of cryptocurrency exchanges. However, its parent company, Payward, is quietly evolving into something far more ambitious. According to co-CEO Arjun Sethi, the Wyoming-based firm is no longer just managing a trading platform but is instead constructing a comprehensive financial empire designed to unify banking, asset management, and institutional services under a single technological roof. By integrating these diverse functions onto one shared infrastructure stack—what Sethi describes as one ledger—the company aims to strip away the layers of intermediaries and delays that typically plague traditional finance.

This strategic shift marks a departure from the everything exchange approach seen at competitors like Coinbase or Binance. While those firms focus on consolidating various assets within a single consumer brand, Payward is positioning itself as an infrastructure provider capable of supporting multiple brands and external partners. This means they aren’t just building tools for their own users; they are creating the plumbing that could potentially power other financial companies. To achieve this, Payward has adopted a flexible growth strategy involving internal development, strategic partnerships with incumbents like Nasdaq and the London Stock Exchange, and aggressive acquisitions.

The scale of this expansion is evident in Payward’s spending habits. The company recently invested 1.5 billion dollars to acquire NinjaTrader to secure US futures brokerage capabilities and added Bitnomial for 550 million dollars to bolster its derivatives infrastructure. These moves avoid the years of regulatory hurdles required to build such systems from scratch. Sethi also hinted at further international growth, mentioning an imminent bank acquisition in Europe to solidify their footprint on the continent.

Despite the massive appetite for growth and high-profile expansions into tokenized equities and lending, there is no immediate pressure to go public. Sethi noted that Payward remains profitable and is comfortably funding its transformation into what analysts call an everything financial infrastructure model. For now, the company seems content to continue absorbing key pieces of the global financial puzzle until its vision of a seamless, borderless monetary system becomes a reality.
