Solana is moving closer to a massive leap in performance as its latest technical overhaul, known as Alpenglow, has officially expanded to its second public test network. Developed by Anza, the company responsible for Solana’s core software, the upgrade is now active on both the devnet and testnet. This phase provides application developers with a critical environment to refine their tools using valueless tokens before any changes are pushed to the mainnet where real capital is at stake.
The primary goal of Alpenglow is to slash transaction settlement times from nearly thirteen seconds down to approximately 150 milliseconds. By dramatically accelerating finality, the point at which a transaction becomes irreversible, Solana hopes to eliminate the awkward lag currently experienced during fund deposits on exchanges or when merchants await confirmation of a digital payment. If successful, this would bring blockchain payments much closer to the instantaneous feel of traditional credit card swipes.
To achieve these speeds, Alpenglow fundamentally alters how validators reach consensus. Instead of recording votes as transactions within blocks, validators will now communicate directly with one another. While this streamlines efficiency, it creates a quirk for data analysts; because validator votes will no longer appear as standard transactions, overall activity charts may show a dip in volume even if actual user behavior remains steady. The Solana Foundation has already alerted data providers to adjust their metrics accordingly to avoid misleading reports.
Despite the progress in testing environments, caution remains the watchword regarding a full rollout. The targeted 150 millisecond window is currently based on simulations rather than live market conditions, and external factors like wallet processing speeds could still add delays for the end user. While Anza’s schedule suggests that feature activations are resuming soon, there is still no official date for when Alpenglow will go live on the main network.
