The First-Ever Bitwise Institutional Crypto Adoption Report

For years, the conversation surrounding institutional cryptocurrency adoption has been little more than guesswork. Because large firms typically keep their digital asset holdings secret to protect their competitive edge or avoid reputational risks, analysts have had to rely on inferences rather than hard data. However, a new report from Bitwise Asset Management aims to pull back the curtain by interviewing senior investment professionals at fifteen of the world’s largest financial entities, including sovereign wealth funds, public pensions, and massive family offices.

The findings challenge the long held belief that big institutions act as weak hands during market volatility. According to the study, not a single one of the interviewed institutions reduced its crypto allocation during a significant fifty percent drawdown between late 2025 and mid 2026. In fact, several participants used the dip as an opportunity to buy more. This suggests a level of conviction far higher than previously assumed, with many treating these assets as long term strategic holds rather than speculative trades.

Bitcoin remains the undisputed king of the institutional portfolio, serving as the primary and often oldest holding for every entity surveyed. Many firms are now pairing Bitcoin with gold as part of a broader diversification strategy. While other assets like Ethereum and Solana are present in portfolios, they tend to be held in smaller amounts and on shorter timelines with specific exit conditions based on value accrual. Overall allocations vary widely depending on the organization’s structure; family offices tend to hold larger stakes while those requiring complex bureaucratic approval, such as sovereign wealth funds, maintain smaller positions.

Perhaps most surprising is that none of these sophisticated investors cited price drops as a reason they would ever sell their holdings. Instead, they pointed toward fundamental failures such as a complete collapse of their original investment thesis, drastic regulatory reversals, or a systemic loss of credibility across the entire industry. As these players settle in for the long haul, Bitwise predicts that a majority of institutional investors will hold some form of cryptocurrency within the next five years.
